New Roots is proud to present the return to the UK of the magical Minimal Klezmer. If you’re a fan of klezmer music you won’t have seen anything like this before. Phenomenal musicianship combines with a comedic physicality and a talent for abstraction to make for a spectacularly entertaining performance. The band will be playing two forty minute sets on the night with a twenty minute interval in between.
Born in the streets of London and based in Venice, Minimal Klezmer Trio was founded in 2011 by three musicians united by a background in classical music, an inclination towards improvisation, and a fatal passion for klezmer.
Their repertoire consists strictly of pieces of Eastern European origin with original arrangements that, in contrast to the more sacred and meditative aspects of klezmer, brings out the ironic, improvisational, and cabaretesque elements of the music.
The minimal line-up of the trio, consisting of “portable” and acoustic instruments, is directly inspired by small klezmer street-formations, learned from the old recordings of Jacob Gegna, Josef Solinski and Mihal Viteazul dating from the early twentieth century.
Minimal Klezmer have enjoyed many prestigious concerts, recordings and radio appearances all over Europe, collaborating and sharing the stage with a host of renowned klezmer groups and musicians (the Amsterdam Klezmer Band and Socalled to name just two). They have played many of the most important international klezmer, folk and jazz festivals (Les Nuit d’O- Montepellier 2016, Jewish Jazz Festival-Bologna 2016,Rhythms of The World- Hitchin 2014, Adriatico Mediterraneo Festival-Ancona 2013, VENETO JAZZ-Venezia 2016 and many more). This unique and intimate performance is definitely not to be missed!
