Following the acclaimed eponymous debut ‘Kings of the South Seas – Chasing the Whale’ ‘Franklin’ is the 10-track second album by the Kings of the South Seas. From Canadian Voyageur paddling songs and English folk ballads, to works composed onboard ice-bound wintering ships and Victorian parlour pieces, the album vividly brings to life the music left by the events and cultural fallout of ill-fated British sea-faring expeditions of the 19th Century. Kings of the South Seas bring their unique and brooding sound to these songs, driving them into the twenty-first century while still maintaining their original and heartfelt spirit.
‘Franklin’ is a gloriously original, haunting and atmospheric album. Produced and mixed by Ben Hillier (Blur, Elbow, Depeche Mode), it was recorded by Kings of the South Seas in St Andrews Mission Church in Gravesend, fittingly, under the glow of stained glass windows dedicated by Lady Franklin to the sailors who lost their lives on his last voyage.
“takes the listener into an oceanic heart of darkness illuminated by powerful skeletal songs from the edge of the known world” – Songlines
